Expo, also known as Universal Exposition or World's Fair, is a thematic event for nations on global scale, which takes place every five years in a city of the world. The Exposition has a duration of a maximum of six months and will involve the construction of temporary pavilions by the participating countries. Each Expo relates to a particular topic that makes it a large theme park to all intents and purposes.
Globally known as Expo, the event is today the result of a long transformation that began in the second industrial revolution. The first edition recognized as a universal exhibition dates back to 1851, when at HydePark, London, the best innovations of the technical progress of nations had been analyzed in the Crystal Palace. The second edition involved Paris in 1855, then later overwhelmed Europe, USA and Australia. The great tornado of Exhibitions invested also Milan in 1906, which made its debut in the world economic scenario with the 'Exhibition of Sempione’ dedicated to land, air and sea transports, in honor of the Tunnel of Sempione completed in the previous year. The success of the italian edition was confirmed by its numbers: 26 participant countries and 5 milion visitors. After Milan, the Universal Exhibitions took place in every part of the world to showing that the event was becoming an important tool to launch the economy and the image of political and social power of each country. The last three editions were those of Hanover in 2000, followed by Aichi in 2005 and Shanghai in 2010.
ABOUT EXPO MILANO 2015
Expo Milano 2015,“Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” is the largest worldwide event ever organized to unite countries, institutions, companies and people around the world to discuss and discover issues related to the availability of sufficient safe, nutritious food and the traditions and culture of food. The Universal Exposition will take place from May 1st to October 31st and involves more than 140 countries in exhibitions and thousands of events. More than 20 million visitors are expected, 14 million Italians and 6 million from abroad. Expo Milano 2015 will talk about the problems of nutrition and the resources of our planet. The idea is to open up a dialogue between international players to exchange views on these major challenges which are relevant to everyone.
All the 20 million visitors will live an extraordinary journey that looks at the complex theme of nutrition. They will have the possibility to take a trip around the world, sampling the food and traditions of people from all over the globe. The aim of Expo Milano 2015 is to create a dialogue between visitors and participants that explores the main themes of the event through events, shows, conferences and meetings and also to pose questions and offer visitors the tools for finding their own answers. Expo Milano 2015 will be the first Exposition in history to be remembered not only for its products but also for its contribution towards education on food and the planet’s precious resources.
EXPO MILANO 2015 THEMES
The Universal Exposition Expo Milano 2015 "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life" will face the problem of feeding the man and the Earth by providing alternative interpretations through events, exhibitions, conferences and meetings in order to convey the main themes that Expo Milano 2015 wants to deepen. Expo Milano 2015 in fact expresses its own interpretation of the theme through 5 Thematic Areas organized in exhibition routes and attractive elements that directly involve all visitors. The spaces dedicated to the 5 thematic areas are: the Pavilion Zero, Future Food District, Children Park, Biodiversity Park, Art & Food.Questions such as 'Is it possible to provide food and water to the world's population? ', 'Is it possible to increase food security?', ‘Is it possible to propose new solutions and perspectives able to protect the biodiversity of the planet?’ will find their answers during the Exposition thanks to the engagement of visitors and participants.
PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES AND PAVILIONS
The large number of participating countries at Expo Milano 2015 is also due to the wide innovative choice linked to different modalities of participation. The 147 participating countries in fact have the possibilities to choose between the so-called Self-Built Pavilions and the Clusters. The Self-Built Pavilions are built in autonomous way from the participating countries and today there are 65 official ones. The Clusters instead represent the innovation of Expo Milano 2015: 9 groups of small pavilions dedicated to nine products or geographical themes. The 9 themes of the Clusters are: Bio-Mediterranean, Cocoa, Coffee, Cereals and Tubers, Fruit and Vegetables, Island, Rice, Spices and Dry Areas. The Clusters will host more than 80 countries which want to share their experience on a particular theme. In addition to the countries, international organizations, private companies and major associations of civil society will participate through their exhibition areas. Great attention will be given to methods of construction, management and decommissioning of the pavilions in order to make even more nature-friendly the world's largest event of 2015.
